photographs on it, that I hope to recover-maybe I will take it to my wiz kid brother Tristan-someday-hes part-time computer doctor. Anyway, I found this photograph stored in picassos web album & I though it was one lost forever...So I want to post it, because it reminds me of my youth (I almost 30 now) I was 21 in this picture and Brian 25, this is when we were renting a house on weaver street in winooski, a house that was about to collapse at any minute. We had a lot of fun it those days and did a lot of art, I think that every minute piece of wall was covered with a art work.. I love the fact that Brian totally looks like a psycho in the picture!

My favorite artist & musican.. check them out!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_V-RJ6vS0YAg/SMbNGKWwdwI/AAAAAAAAAC8/HALOXj-lQRo/s400/151515.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5244104321862235906" />
My husband Brian is having a art show at Muddy Waters a coffee shop on main street in Burlington, in october. I was looking online and around town at posters to see if one already existed, to no avail. Hopefully some people will show up. I want it to be a informal sort of thing, for people who like to run, and just want to connect with like-minded others. We'll see how it goes, and if anyone turns up. Brians going to run with me, anyway.
I recently joined netflix & have seen some pretty neat movies, a lot of pretty neat movies. Some notably interesting ones were "Particles of Truth", "Blue State" ,"Akihabira Geeks", "51 Birch Street" and if your in the mood for something romantic, "Broken English". The reason for the running group.... FEAR, of turning into an immovable barnacle on the lounge chair.

working on our house

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_V-RJ6vS0YAg/SLhV7WgRNpI/AAAAAAAAAB0/rRMY4EHuJK4/s200/house+repair+393.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5240032644587140754" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_V-RJ6vS0YAg/SLhUovftlpI/AAAAAAAAABs/-dTO3C5zV-I/s200/erin-duct+work.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5240031225366550162" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_V-RJ6vS0YAg/SLhTPdiQeFI/AAAAAAAAABk/r1WjDLQBC80/s200/brian-duct+work.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5240029691537029202" />

Currently we are running duct work in our basement in the race against the oncoming winter. Pretty sweet! This revamped Newport Vermont cafe is nice to have 2 blocks from my house. (see above photo)
I have not written in my blog for quite some time now. I really intended to be more dedicated to it, when we took our trip to Greece & Italy in March-April-but It was extremley difficult to get online when we traveling because of the expense at internet cafes, however, I hope to post some of the pictures from that trip, now that I'm at a place to do so. Better late then never. So I've got some catching up to do... A lot has happened in my life this year.
After returning from our 2 month backpacking trip through Greece & Italy, we moved up to our Newport house that we had purchased last december impulsivley. It is a beautiful house, full of history-it was like walking into a museum, everything was left from the early part of the century, as though it were trapped in time. One of the original owners was the ship captain clark of the Anthimos on lake memphremagog. Originally from montreal, he had a daughter, Betty Clark that lived in the house her entire life, until she went into a nursing home, then died, leaving the house vacant for 8 years until we bought it. She had apparently lived in the house alone for most of her life, never married, and was viewed by others as sort of a recluse. She had gone mad in her later years, aquiring many cats-causing her to be deemed a crazy cat lady. I have more to learn about the history of this house, but this is what I know so far.
I found a job for the summer, starting in May working at Butterworks farm. I've been working there there about 30 hours a week, milking cows, working in the fields, stacking wood, weedwacking, throwing hay in the loft, you name it. It has been a very physical job. I work with some good folks. It's good honest work.
But I'm looking for something else for the winter. It's hard to be picky about jobs up here-but to be honest, I care more about art and writing and creative pursuits then bringing home the bacon so to speak..I don't even like bacon. I'm sick of working for other people! I really want to go back to school to get my MFA. But until I can afford it-I'll have to just work on my own for now. I wish you didn't have to be rich to pursue graduate school. I was in graduate school for education but currently I'm a drop out- because I decided it was a waste of money to pursue something I wasn't altogether passionate about. I'd be so indebt, I wouldn't be able to really continue to do the things I love. So screw it, I'm not going to go to graduate school just for goddamn bragging rights, which I think to some extent this is why a lot of people go-for a false sense of being better then others or to make a lot of money-or both. But some people generally love what they are studying-this should be the reason you go-or if you need to go to get the job you would love. Or if someone else is paying your way and you can afford to be a life time student. I would really love to be a life time student I think-but not footing the bill for the rest of my life, nah...

WE ARE IN ATHENS

Hello everyone! I'm sorry I have not been very good about keeping with my blog as I intended. I did not bring my own computer with me, and I have not been able to keep up with it (time at internet cafes add up when your on a budget). I'M at the Aprodite hostel now in Athens (where they have free unlimited internet use). We have been traveling just about 3 weeks now (time flies). We started off in Rome for 2 nights (at a very over priced hotel-bad choice-but we were way jet lagged. Then we took a 7 hour train ride to Bari Italy, crossed into Patras Greece on like a 17 hour Ferry (we slept on the Ferry-not in a cabin-on the floor). Then from Patras we went to Athens and took another Ferry through the night to Chania, Crete. We Stayed in Chania for 1 week. Part of that time we rented a car and drove into the Mountains all the way to the Samharia Gorge Beautiful! We have lots of pictures. The towns perched on the cliff sides were amazing! After Chania we move to Rethynmon, Crete (about an hour away) Really neat old Medieveal town with winding streets. We stayed at a hostel here right in town. After Rethynmon We moved on to the island of Santorini where we stayed in Perissa at a very affordable hotel for 4 nights. We rented four wheelers and drove all around the island. The whole island was beautiful. Oia was breathtaking (you should look up a picture on google since I can't put my pics on right now). Fira was also beautiful. From Santorini we took a ferry back to Athens (where we are currently). The boat ride from Santorini was the worst yet (everyone including Brian and I were seasick) The waves must have been 20 feet, no kidding. Anyway I got to go, I'm at a hostel and people are waiting for their turn on the computer. I will have lots more details when I get back. Both Brian and I are keeping a journal and taking lot of pictures. Cheers Erin

Last day of work

Today was my last day of work. it was sort of wierd because I feel uncomfortable with goodbyes. Not always, but in this case, I worked in a really small store for the past 8 month, So I see the same people pretty regularly, both customers, and my coworkers. I wasn't really expecting to feel so sad about it, until it actually was the last day. It was more the people then the acutual job duties that I will miss. I work with some wonderful people and I feel I've been treated very well there and have learned a lot from the depth of character I have encountered at the job.
We have about 5 days before we leave for the Italy/Greece trip. We have quite a bit to do before we leave. But I'm excited, I have not taken a "vacation" in 5 years, longer then a week, so I'm ready. I'm sure Brian is ready too, he has worked really hard the last 5 years. Greece/Italy here we come!!

This article ( written by Doreen Hannes) reminds us to wake up!

MOST PEOPLE DON'T WANT TO HEAR THE TRUTH

By Doreen Hannes
February 13, 2008
NewsWithViews.com

Now, more than in the past 100 years or so of our nation's history, we have a great number of people who sense that something 'just ain't right'. So what is one to do? First of all, you begin a quest for the truth about any particular topic. Pick one. Currently, you can choose from the NAU, Real ID, NAIS, the "Weapons of Mass Destruction" that aren't in Iraq, the Law of the Sea Treaty, the water boarding issue in Gitmo, the legality of the "income tax," the effects of the 'free trade' agreements on our nation, the "Clean Water Restoration Act," the "Military Commissions Act", Agenda 21, the "CFR" or heck, for some real light study, how about the institution of central banking and fractional reserve banking systems? There are a lot more, but this should at least give the idea that we have a problem. A very, very, big problem. It's like that infamous elephant in the living room that no one wants to talk about and most don't want to see.

Yet those giant piles of elephant excrement keep getting on everyone's shoes, so many have no choice but to begin to contemplate that where there is crap, there is a crapper. And before one can get the elephant out of the room, you have to admit that there is one. Some people will sit with brown stuff running down their faces and look at you with a blank stare saying, "What elephant?" They don't even notice the manure. Those folks are the furniture….You can't help them, so don't waste your time trying. Some people will marvel at the manure that keeps spontaneously generating out of thin air and blame it on the opposing political party; you may or may not be able to help these people. They are certainly worth a try. What you really want is the person that is wondering what kind of beast keeps splattering them and why isn't anyone on NBC-BS talking about it? These are people that are ready for some truth. Now you've got something to work with.

When you find someone who wants to know what the heck is going on, you just received a parallel promotion. Now you have the duty of teaching this person what you know, but don't look for a paycheck, this job has more eternal rewards. Since not many of us were raised up in households that knew the effects of birth certificates, Social Security numbers, and positive versus non-positive law (if lots of us were raised with that knowledge we wouldn't be in the mess we're in) we all had to start learning at some point. So you have to find out what the capacity for understanding of this person is. Even though it's way too late to be polite, you have to keep some empathy about you or you'll just scare the person into hopelessness, paranoia, or worse yet, apathy, and that isn't helpful to you, them or our nation.

If someone asks you "How can Congress pass a law that violates the Constitution?," don't hit them with a dissertation on the power structure of the NWO complete with breakdowns of the effects of our membership in the UN, the truth about the "Civil War," the history of the Federal Reserve and the Shadow government all at once. Just answer their question and it will lead to another question. Think of it like food. They need to eat little bites at a time. They may be hungry for the whole meal because they are one of the rare people who truly want the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, but they still need to chew only what they can swallow. It is an elephant after all.

Then there are those folks who notice the elephant feces, and ask about it, and when you begin to show them the elephant, they disdainfully say, "How preposterous! That cannot possibly be!! I know that is indeed elephant manure, but still….I'll acknowledge the tail and leave the rest to my imagination, thank you. Dismissed." These people are even more disappointing than the last type. They see some of it, but want to keep their hands over their eyes and admit into existence the little bit of what they can see through their fingers. If they keep being forced to admit that the tail is connected to a rump, and the rump is connected to rear legs, and the legs -well you get the picture, and they may, but it requires a lot of patience.

Finally there are people who don't want to look at the elephant even though it's standing on their foot. We all have plenty of these people in our lives. When told about something like the NAIS with all of its effects on choice for consumers, loss of rural jobs and businesses, privacy issues, consolidation of agriculture and effects on property rights, they say things like "I want to be sure my burger is free from terrorism." These people will trade your real liberty for their false sense of security in a heartbeat. They think they get the truth from the evening news, believe that you can't understand issues without a doctorate, and that the government gives us rights. They are absolutely sure there are no absolutes. They sit there obstinately no matter how persuasively you plead with them to move. They are the furniture. They stay where they have been put and will not be swayed.

Sometimes the furniture is part of your immediate family. You give them articles, places on the internet to visit, links to government documents on the topic, and endless reams of documentation and mainstream news articles, and they toss back a flippant accusation that "You're just a conspiracy theorist. None of this is that bad." Usually you'll ask, "Did you read what I gave you?," and they'll say something like "I scanned some of it, but didn't really have time to spend on it. My kid had a soccer game and then our favorite show was on, so we got pizza on the credit card and just enjoyed the entertainment." They just told you they don't know, don't care, and asked that you please stop confusing them with the facts…When you find that you are engaged in conversation with a coffee table, stop. Save your breath for those with questions. No impassioned plea ever moved a couch. Don't talk to the furniture.

© 2008 Doreen Hannes - All Rights Reserved

Sign Up For Free E-Mail Alerts

Doreen Hannes is a homesteading mom, and a truly grass roots activist for small scale and traditional farming rights. Check them out for yourself. If you are buying something from one of these stores anyway (there are over 680 listed), then buy it through this website and they donate a certain amount to charity. Looks like a good idea to me initially (although a lot of the stores are large corporate stores-and its always a good idea to buy from a small locally owned store first!) It's still worth looking at in my opinion because if there is something your looking to get and can't find and you are going to need to go through the internet anyway you might as well get them to donate to a good cause (and some of the causes are local causes in your home state-you just select your state off a list). Check it out. Next time you buy a book through Barnes and Nobles or need some obscure electronic devise from Best Buy (go through this site-and have these companies give some money back)

"Donate to Charity While You Shop: If you're going to be buying it anyway, you might as well use a service like igive.com or benevolink.com, free services that collect a fee from merchants for each of your purchases, then allows you to choose what good cause receives your funds>"

We are going to Crete!

We have decided to go to Crete first. When we get off the plane in Rome we are going to head right there on the train (and Ferry-it's an island). My boss loaned me several guide books (lonley planet) on Crete, (Turkey, India-we arn't going there on this trip but maybe another trip) and Greece. I have a towering stack of guidebooks now. My boss is so cool, when have I ever had a boss that would supply me with guidebooks for going around the world after I have given my notice at my job? NEVER. She is just a really open minded and giving person-I feel lucky to have worked for her and hope that she is able to travel again one day too (as she apparantly loves to travel).
Anyway, I've read the guide book on Crete and it looks pretty neat for this trip. Also it gets 300 days of sun a year-that wil be so uplifting after yet another Vermont winter.

"Crete is the biggest, arguably the most beautiful and certainly one of the most fascinating of all the Greek islands. Small wonder it accounts for a quarter of the entire tourist trade of Greece. It's the birthplace of European civilisation - an island practically sinking beneath the weight of its world-famous historic sites. Even if you're not the slightest bit interested in archaeology or history the ancient treasures of Crete are guaranteed to blow your mind. Having kids however doesn't have to make your life devoid of travel and adventure. It seems the opposite should be the case, children are naturally filled with curiosity. I've come across a few websites that focus on family travel. So, if you have kids, and you really love to travel too, why not share with your children your love of travel? What better way to teach them about the world.

http://www.travelwithyourkids.com/

It's seems daunting making a big trip happen. But actions begin as mere thoughts. It is amazing what we can accomplish when we set our mind to it. This article discusses making a big adventure a reality. The message is- if you really want to do something bad enough, don't procrastinate, transform your visions into reality. -Wandering Lass
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is the article from Brave New Traveler - Online Travel Magazine:
http://www.bravenewtraveler.com. I have cut and pasted the entire article because, I was having problems posting the direct link. Read the article below.

3 Secrets To Planning Your Next Big Adventure

Posted By Lee Lefever On March 5, 2007 @ 8:32 am In Travel Tips | 5 Comments

It may appear that money is the biggest barrier to accomplishing your next adventure, but it isn’t.

I remember the first time the trip became real to me. My wife Sachi and I were at our friend’s house and, as we planned before the visit, we let it fly…

“So, we have some big news for you guys. Starting in December of 2005, we’re going on a trip around the world for a year, coming back home in December of 2006.” I remember this moment for a few reasons.

First, I remember their reaction, which was something like “you’re gonna WHAT?” Second, this was the first time we told anyone about our big plans. For the first time, we were officially on the hook – to change plans now would be tantamount to failure.

Now that the trip is an [1] incredible memory, we are often asked for advice for people who are planning their next big adventure (whether it’s travel, business or personal).

Looking back to the event above, it is clear to us that two things came together that night that did a lot to keep us focused, excited and motivated.

1. We Set a Date

Procrastination is easy when you’re facing a big challenge. Don’t do it. Set a realistic date, even if it’s years away and plot out milestones along the way. You’ll be surprised at how things fall into place.

2. We Told People

Do not take this lightly. When you’re ready, tell your friends and family about your plans. Once you take this step, the people in your life will be interested and anxious to see you pull it off. Peer pressure will become part of the planning experience.

Lastly, we are big believers in financial responsibility and planning your next adventure often requires lifestyle changes to make it happen from a financial perspective.

A friend introduced to a new term: Monetorium. A monetorium is a moratorium on spending money.

For over a year before we left, we changed our lifestyle to save more money and called this “living the monetorium”. No new clothes, no lattes, no eating out, no cable TV, etc. The monetorium became the name of our new lifestyle and all the little penny-pinching ideas and games we played to save a little more for the trip (”Let’s make the shampoo last until we leave!”)

Living the monetorium was a challenge that made saving money fun. So the third and final point that enabled us to proceed:

3. We Lived the Monetorium

Take a good look at your lifestyle spending habits and consider what changes you could make to enable you to save more. Remember that you’re saving for a life-changing experience, not just a rainy day.

Always ask yourself: What would this buy in Thailand? From this perspective, it’s easier to make the sacrifice. Tell people about the monetorium too! They can help.

It may appear that money is the biggest barrier to accomplishing your next adventure, but it isn’t, it is commitment. Planning and time can take care of the finances, but commitment and determination have to come first.

Only after you mentally commit to making the adventure a part of your life will you have the ability to make it real. Before setting a date, telling people or living the monetorium, you have to cross the chasm of doubt and anxiety.

Once that it done, everything else will seem easy.
Lee LeFever and his wife Sachi spent a year traveling around the world, and blogged about it on [2] The World Is Not Flat. They also work on social design for the web with their own consulting company [3] Common Craft.

Wandering with your sweetie?

This article gives you some tips on how to sucessfully travel with your partner.

http://www.bravenewtraveler.com/2008/01/07/the-secret-to-staying-together-on-the-journey/

I love this old Ramblin' Jack Elliot Song-900 Miles from our Home

Here is a nice rendition of it by Bethany and Rufus.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuXc-RLtblY

Here are the lyrics:

I'm walking down this track,
I've got tears in my eyes,
Trying to read a letter from my home.
If this train runs me right
I'll be home tomorrow night.
I'm nine hundred miles from my home.
And I hate to hear that lonesome whistle blow.

I'll pawn you my watch
And I'll pawn you my chain; I mean I have some awesome friends out in the country, but it always seemed like I had to drive at least 30 minutes or more to see people or to do something (unless of course it was a walk in nature-which was always an option). I'm sort of enjoying being in an area now where I can drive 5-10 minutes, or even walk and I'm able to hang out with people. Although, now I'll miss the people that used to live out in the so called "boonies" with me (and I'm sure I'll miss the beauty of the country soon too-I always want what I don't have, of course).
It's been great though. I have this one friend M., that I get to see almost every week and we will do something fun, like go to the gym, or so to Bikram yoga (you sweat like a lawn sprinkler-don't personally reccommend it-though I enjoy other forms of yoga), or go out to breakfast at Sneakers, whatever. It's great to have a close friend. And tonight I was so excited I got to see my friend R. who I have not seen in almost a year (or more). She came down about an 1 1/2 from northern vermont because she is taking classes for her graduate program at UVM. So it was fun, the three of us got to catch up and hang out like old times. I'm excited because when I move up to Northern Vermont in May maybe I'll get to see my friend R. more. But I'll miss M. It's funny it certain ways I love change, like I get really tired of routine. But with friends its totally different. You wish things could be the same forever with friends, like you could make friendships last forever. This has happened to me so many times in life, you remember these people that used to be such great friends, and you loose contact with them, and wonder how their lives are now. It's kind of sad. Thats why I think it really important to make the effort to stay in contact with friends. Theres nothing in the world like having people you really know well, and they know you. It's great. But this is getting kind of sappy, I'm starting to tear up..... I just can't continue this post......... Goodnight.

Why travel???

This article has a eye opening perspective. It is easy to take for granted, the opportunities we have in our society. The opportunity we have to travel, in fact is a novelty that much of our world population does not experience. Ironic it is that it may take traveling for us to fully realize what we have. http://www.transitionsabroad.com/publications/magazine/0005/why_travel.shtml

I feel sometimes as though I really need to do more then I do to help the world. Some of the decisions I make are selfish, I know. But sometimes I feel apathetic as well, living in this society where you don't know what to get people for Christmas gifts because they have every physical thing you can possibly think of, and you know that in 6 months or whatever this nameless gift will make its way to a landfill (so, I think I'm starting to turn towards giving some non-physical gifts). It seems sometimes in America we have every physical thing possible but we are missing things that are of greater significance, like community, and the passion to fight for our beliefs. It seems sometimes, people no longer know where to stand (I'll speak for myself, when I say this) Maybe its just me, maybe I just need to become involved with something I find purposeful, and that I feel will actually make a difference. I guess I don't really know if other people really feel this way. Maybe its just me. But maybe not, I'm sure there are others that must feel lost in our world sometimes. So traveling makes sense for people like us. It makes us feel as though we are on a quest, searching for answers, even if traveling just raises more questions.

Video of Tuscany

Here is a video of the Tuscany region, beautiful!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkG969M2Al0

Just copy this address into web browser to watch video on utube.
